Keeping your wolfhound cool in hot weather is very important - they're really not
'warm weather' dogs. One good way of doing this is a wet T-shirt, but as he got older and a bit stiff in the joints, Chewbacca used to find this a rather painful indignity, so we came up with 'CoolCoats'. All you do is take an old bath towel, dust off the sewing machine (or, in Anne's case, dust off your mother!) add a few pieces of tape and 'quick-release' clips from old dog collars (or Velcro) et voila! Then, when the going gets hot, just soak the coats, squeeze out the excess, throw over the dogs and ten minutes later - cool hounds! Another effective (and much simpler) solution is to use a misting spray bottle to dampen your dog's coat. |
Chewbacca and young Darcy model one approach: wet T shirts . . . |
. . . or, for those with that certain sense of style: the Torteval CoolCoat! |
Another stylish option is a bandana. Again, ours were made by Anne's wonderfully
obliging mum. Quick release clips from old collars make them easy to get on and
off, and keeping the bandana wet maximises the cooling effect. |
